GH4 "please turn off and on again" issue
Apr 23, 2016
Hi all,
Having a weird issue with my brand new GH4.
Can take video just fine, no problems there. When I try to shoot still photos, though, the camera screen goes grey and I get "please turn the camera off and on again."
The camera does actually save the photo to the SD card, but still crashes.
If I turn the electronic shutter on, the camera operates just fine in still mode and there are no issues at all.
Have tried this with 3rd party batteries, panasonic batteries, and freshly formatted PNY and Sandisk cards.
Any ideas? I upgraded to the GH4 after the hotshoe on my GH3 fell out and the rear folding screen became too loose to use -- really not blown away by Panasonic's durability if my brand new camera is ALREADY broken. Ugh.
Cheers

It happens every time I try to take a photo with the mechanical shutter. 100% reproducible.
Happens with the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8, Leica 15mm f/1.7 and without a lens at all.

I had this permanently with a 3rd party battery grip. Since I changed to the original-grip it never occured.

Yes, using a 3rd party battery in the Panasonic battery grip results in this type behavior. No problem when using a Panasonic battery in the grip. The 3rd party battery works fine when installed in the camera body with the battery grip not installed.
Go figure!

I had the same issue with my G5 and posted last night in this forum. If I knew how to link to my post, I would do so. Otherwise, look for my post
Anyway, basically what fixed my issue (I think), is that I took off the lens and clicked the shutter button several times. After that, everything has worked just fine.
Hope this helps.

Most definitely I have discovered its related to 3rd party battery. I have a drive grip and whenever 2 batteries are inside the body and the drive its the 3rd party battery that causes this issue when even slightly low on power.
If I use just Panasonic batteries...no issue.
So thats it...no more third party batteries :)...not worth the hassle.

FYI without warning my GH3 refused to power on, it did power on with the battery grip attached. A few earlier I had a problem with my external flash not working and I noticed that the flash shoe could be broken. At this point I was tempted to get the GH4 but instead I decided to bring the camera in for service. On the service report they noted that a 1€ fuse was replaced, the hinge and the hot shoe were tightened, total cost €114. I will take another look at the GH4 after Photokina when the GH5 is released

I do not understand. AFAIK the body only takes one battery and the BG a second battery. Where did you put the third battery ? I have one original and two third party batteries, never had any problems while using the BGGH3 with any battery combination on my GH3.
